Humanities Moments

Black History and the Humanities

In honor of Black History Month, we’ve curated this collection of Humanities Moments celebrating the ways in which members of the African Diaspora have shaped the world.

From musicians to National Park Service rangers to civil rights leaders, African Americans have made history through their creative, intellectual, and political contributions. In unique ways, these Humanities Moments demonstrate the power of this legacy. Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics inspired a college student to reflect on the repercussions of slavery in the United States. A teacher recalls how a biography of Jackie Robinson inspired him to dream big as a boy. The avant-garde creations worn by black fashion models deepened one woman’s appreciation of Ebony Fashion Fair.

How do the humanities help you to honor Black history?
