Humanities Moments Project
Informed Consent and Copyright Permission for interviews, recordings, images, personal documents, and use thereof
The “Humanities Moments” Project is an initiative of the National Humanities Center. By the submission of your Materials you are signifying your consent for these materials to be deposited in the Humanities Moments Collection and used by the National Humanities Center in accordance with the conditions described below.
I voluntarily agree to be interviewed for/have my Materials included as a part of the National Humanities Center’s “Humanities Moments” Project and to permanently give, convey, and assign the recordings, transcripts, and any other documents or materials (“the Material”) to the National Humanities Center. I understand that these materials are being collected to increase knowledge about, and appreciation for, the humanities by the general public.
I understand that the Material created or compiled as part of the process may include:
- An audio and/or video recording
- An edited transcript, abstract, field notes, short descriptive essay, and/or tape log
- A photograph or other still image of me in my home or office
- Copies of personal documents of my choosing that I provide
I herein freely share the Material with the National Humanities Center under the terms of a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. This means that I retain the copyright to the Material, but that the public may freely copy, modify, and share these items for non-commercial purposes under the same terms if they include original source information.
I understand that the Material enters the National Humanities Center’s Humanities Moments Collection, and I consent to let the Material be made available for use consistent with the Center’s mission, including but not limited to use whole or in part in exhibitions, public programs, documentary films, radio broadcasts, and publications in all formats and media, including on the Internet.
Image Copyright and Licensing
Before you upload an image, make sure that the image falls into one of these four categories:
- It’s your own work: You own all rights to the image, usually meaning that you created it entirely yourself. In case of a photograph or screenshot, you must also own the copyright for all copyright-protected items (e.g. statue or app) that appear in it.
- Freely licensed: You can prove that the copyright holder has released the image under an acceptable free license. When in doubt, do not upload copyrighted images. IMPORTANT NOTE: just because you did not have to pay money for the image does not mean that it is necessarily “free content” or acceptable for use on the Humanities Moment platform. The vast majority of images on the internet are copyrighted and cannot be used without some kind of permission. If you have a question, please reach out directly to our Humanities Moments curatorial staff who can provide assistance: email@example.com
- Public domain: You can prove that the image is in the public domain, i.e. free of all copyrights.
- Fair use: You believe that the image meets the special conditions for non-free content, which exceptionally allow the use of unlicensed material, and you can provide an explicit non-free use rationale explaining why and how you intend to use it.
